Ian Chappell wrote in an ESPNcricinfo column, ‘During an interview earlier this month, when ICC President Greg Barkley was asked about the rapid expansion of T20 cricket around the world, he said, ‘There is not much we can do. Huh.’ His indifference towards Test cricket is evident from his statement. Ian Chappell has always considered T20 cricket as a threat to Tests. Barkley also said, ‘Bilateral cricket will suffer due to the popularity of T20. If T20 cricket prosper, then according to the administrators this longer format of the game will suffer.

Meg Lanning’s Criticism

When Australia women’s cricket team captain Meg Lanning denied Barkley’s statement, she said, “We want to be ambitious.” Cricket administration should be anything but ambitious. They follow the money slowly and often shy away from steps that can be taken in the best interest of the game.

Chappell believes, ‘Cricket administrators should have organized an inclusive debate long ago. So that planning can be done for the future of the test. The game always depends on the current players and fans and not on the variety. If the modern version of Test cricket involves shortening game days for fun and a more aggressive approach, then the old people should not cry about it.

Test cricket limited

This has resulted in administrators programming more and more T20 cricket. Test cricket is limited. Although many young cricketers have publicly said that Test cricket is the best. Many players are having great entertainment in the bigger format. Despite this, it has been limited. Chappell says ‘Both Test and 50-over cricket are very good formats. They are entertaining if played well.
