Canada beat Philippines by 118 runs in the second match of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier A 2022. In this match, Matthew Spurs, making his T20 International debut for Canada, played an unbeaten innings of 108 runs. With this innings, he made a world record.

The second match of the first day of the tournament was played between Canada and the Philippines. In this match , Canadian opener Matthew Spurs created history.
Spurs has become the batsman to play the biggest innings in a debut T20 International match. The 22-year-old Australian-born Spurs played an unbeaten knock of 108 off 66 balls. His innings included 14 fours and 3 sixes. He was also given life by the Philippines fielders on scores of 3, 37 and 91. He broke the record held by Leslie Dunbar of Serbia. Dunbar scored 104* in the debut T20 International against Bulgaria in 2019.

So far, four batsmen have scored a century in the debut match of T20 International. There are only two Canadian batsmen in this. Apart from Spurs, Ravinderpal Singh played an innings of 101 runs in 2019. Namibia’s Jean-Pierre Kotze scored 101* runs in the debut T20 International match in 2019 itself. Ricky Ponting holds the record for playing the biggest innings in a debut match for a full member country of the ICC. He had already scored 98* runs in T20 International match.
Playing first, Canada scored 216 for one with the help of Matthew Spurs’ century. Ryan Pathan scored 73 runs. In reply, the Philippines team could only score 98 runs for 5 wickets in 20 overs. In this way Canada won the match by 118 runs. At the same time, Nepal defeated Oman by 39 runs in the first match of the tournament. Nepal scored 117 runs while playing first. Oman’s team got out for 78 runs.
